Student Spotlight: From Student Competitor to Cybersecurity Analyst — Garrett Hannett’s Journey
For Garrett Hannett, the path to a career in cybersecurity started with a leap of faith—and a community that helped him grow. Today, Garrett is a Senior Cyber Security Analyst at Gibraltar Industries, but his journey began when he switched from studying information systems to pursuing cybersecurity at Governors State University.

There, Garrett found the Cyber Defense Club, a student group that had lost momentum. Instead of walking away, he stepped up to help revive it. Leading the club gave him opportunities to sharpen his skills, compete in challenges, and connect with industry professionals who would later shape his career.
One of the most valuable parts of his journey was the National Cyber League (NCL). Garrett credits the competition—and the community that surrounds it—with giving him the confidence and practice he needed to grow. He highlights resources like open gym time and the guided answers shared in Slack as game-changers for solving problems and developing real-world skills.
Now in a successful career, Garrett pays it forward by sharing tips for new NCL players. His advice is simple but powerful: focus on understanding where learners are coming from, support their mindset, and create an encouraging environment where they can grow.
Beyond his own success, Garrett is passionate about helping others find their place in tech. He’s involved in Black Girls Hack, where he supports and uplifts women of color in cybersecurity. He’s also created beginner-friendly resources with inclusivity in mind. As he puts it: “I think the best definition of allyship is being someone who wants an even playing field.”
Garrett’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. From a student reviving a cyber club, to competing in the NCL, to supporting others in the wider community, he shows that building a career in cybersecurity isn’t just about technical skills—it’s also about connection, inclusivity, and giving back.
